Deconstruction of historic site on Main Street underway

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– Deconstruction of the historic site of “Hunter-Gatherer Brewery” on Main Street is now underway with plans to take the building apart piece by piece.

The project is a community effort led by Historic Columbia and several other local organizations that aims to save, re-use, and recycle the materials.

The structure was built in 1913, and was first used as a motor car company.

Over the years it would serve as a market, a drugstore, a barber shop, a deli, and of course most recently as a neighborhood bar.

The architectural preservation organization known as “Conway Salvage” is in charge of completing the process.

ABC Columbia spoke with Executive Director Alan Todd who says the careful deconstruction of a historic building is a much better alternative to the materials ending up in a landfill.

And beginning this Monday, Todd says they are looking for volunteers to help.
