City of Columbia Council approves moratorium for short-term rentals

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– As a result of a deadly shooting at an Airbnb Saturday, the Columbia City Council gave their first approval for a temporary moratorium for short-term rentals on Tuesday, June 10.

The proposed ordinance has a year-long moratorium for any new rental permits under the city’s short-term rental ordinance.

The city council says the over saturation of short-term rental properties has created hazardous and potentially dangerous conflicts within residential neighborhoods.

And the ordinance allows them to explore additional restrictions related to density and public safety.
