States sue 23andMe over customer data use

(CNN)– South Carolina has joined 27 states and Washington D.C. in a lawsuit against 23andMe.

The bankrupt DNA testing company which has saliva samples from more than 15 million people is planning to sell the genetic data to a third-party.

A lawsuit filed this week claims selling the samples could pose challenges to privacy, including for people who have yet to be born.

Attorneys General are pushing for a judge to decide that customers own their genetic material and that 23andMe does not have the right to give that information away without proper consent.
