Southwest airlines adds new cockpit safety alerts

(CNN)– Some airlines, including Southwest and Alaska Airlines have a new tool for pilots in the cockpit.

It’s an alert system designed by Honeywell, and its similar to safety systems in newer cars that detect blind spots.

Honeywell’s alert system gives pilots verbal warnings and text alarms.

It could be used if a pilot is about to use the wrong runway for takeoff or landing or if a pilot is coming in too high or too fast for a landing.

Southwest says the alert system has been added to nearly all of its approximately 800 aircraft.
