SCDPH offering free HIV/STD testing Thursday

SOUTH CAROLINA (WOLO) – In recognition of National HIV Testing Day Friday, the South Carolina Department of Public Health is offering free testing statewide this Thursday.

Officials say as of Dec. 31, 2023, there are more than 20,000 South Carolina residents living with diagnosed HIV infection, including AIDS.

For the two-year period of 2022-2023 approximately 1,500 people were newly diagnosed with HIV in South Carolina. Of those newly diagnosed, 55% were African American, 25% were white and 13% were Hispanic.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that approximately 16% of people with HIV in South Carolina do not know their HIV status.

SCDPH is offering free HIV and STD testing at many health departments across the state Thursday. Appointments are encouraged.
