Coroner identifies man who died in police custody
Irmo, S.C. (WOLO)– The Richland County Coroner has identified a man officials say died in police custody last week.
The coroner identified the deceased as Byron Jackson, 45, of North Augusta.
According to the Irmo Police Department, officers responded to a fight in the New Friarsgate area Sunday, June 21st.
Investigators say after a chase and an altercation with officers, Jackson was taken into custody.
Shortly after being detained, police say he began having trouble breathing.
Police say he was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead Wednesday.
