Irmo PD held press conference on police custody death
IRMO, S.C. (WOLO)– Irmo Police Department held a press conference on Monday morning in reference to the death of a N. Augusta man that was in police custody last month, say officials.
The police department say on Sunday, June 22, at around 2 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 50 block of Old Well Road for a possible altercation in a vehicle.
As officer arrived and attempted to make contact, the suspect vehicle drove away, says IPD.
Soon after, a short chase took place, and officers were not able to confirm if there was another person in the vehicle.
The chase ended when the person drove over some wood pallets near a creek, that caused the vehicle to be disable, according to officers.
When the vehicle crashed, Officers John Parker, and Tyler Baker approached the vehicle and gave the person who was identified as Byron Jackson verbal commands to comply.
Officers say Jackson continued to struggle with officers landing everyone down a creek about 20 feet down a ravine.
Officer Baker deployed his taser to assist Officer Parker in gaining control and placed Jackson in handcuffs, says Irmo PD.
Lexington County deputies arrived and assisted in pulling Jackson out of the creek. EMS then took Jackson to the hospital.
Days later on Wednesday, June 25, Jackson died in a hospital.
Due to Jackson being in custody, SLED was called to investigate.
