Newberry County deputies say former town clerk, treasurer arrested for embezzlement

NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– Newberry County deputies say the former clerk and treasurer for the Town of Peak has been arrested for embezzlement.

According to investigators, after receiving a complaint about money missing from the town treasury, the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office opened an investigation.

The investigation determined that at least $70,000 was spent on various personal bills and items over a two year period.

Crystal Dawn Cocker, 47, of Peak, S.C. was arrested in Union County, GA and extradited back to South Carolina.

Cocker is charged with embezzlement of public funds over $10,000 and is at the Newberry County Detention Center under a $50,000 cash/surety bond.
