Orangeburg County council members passed a hate crime ordinance

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– Orangeburg County council members passed a hate crime ordinance in its third and final reading.

The Hate Intimidation Ordinance will penalize anyone who harms a person or their property due to their race, religion, sex, gender, nationality, or disability.

Orangeburg is the second county to pass a hate crime ordinance after Richland County passed theirs in June.

The city council is holding a first reading to amend police regulations of the city code by adding the hate intimidation section on Tuesday, Aug. 19.

South Carolina is one of two states without a hate crime law.
