CONGAREE, S.C. (WOLO)– The Town of South Congaree has released a statement regarding the collision involving the town’s chief that happened in Columbia last month.

On August 27, the Town of South Congaree’s Police Chief, Steven Jonas, was involved in a motor vehicle collision in the City of Columbia.

Chief Jonas and occupants in the other vehicle were taken for medical evaluation and care at a local hospital, according to officials.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol has concluded their investigation into the collision and found that Chief Jonas experienced a transient ischemic attack (TIA), commonly known as a mini stroke, at the time of the collision.

Currently, Chief Jonas is on medical leave in accordance with Town policy as he recovers.

Town of South Congaree Town Administrator, Crystal Bouknight, states, “Our thoughts right now are with Chief Jonas, and with the family in the other vehicle that was involved.”

Town officials say Lt. Marchant will remain in charge of the South Congaree Police Department while Chief Jonas is recovering on medical leave.
