Man arrested for DUI accused of hitting trooper during traffic stop

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– A man has been arrested for a DUI after hitting a trooper during a traffic stop, said RCSD deputies.

The sheriff’s department said 35-year-old Alex Bookert was arrested after a trooper was hit during a traffic stop early Sunday morning.

On Sunday morning, September 7, around 12:15 a.m., RCSD was called to an accident with injuries involving a South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper.

Once at the scene, deputies learned that the trooper was on a traffic stop on I77 N near mile marker 8 when he was struck by a separate vehicle driving along the interstate.

The trooper was taken to the hospital by EMS.

Deputies said the vehicle stopped and the driver was identified as Bookert.

Additionally, deputies said he showed signs of impairment.

He was arrested for DUI and endangering emergency services personnel.

Also, he was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and is awaiting a bond hearing.
