Deputies investigating possible threat at Midlands school

Newberry Co., S.C. (WOLO)– Investigators with the Newberry Co. Sheriff’s Office say the Newberry School District requested an investigation into a potential threat against Whitmire Community School.
Investigators say as a precaution, additional security was deployed to the school and the surrounding area.
Deputies say they interviewed people who posted on social media claiming to have information about the threat.
According to authorities, several people mentioned receiving tips or seeing notes that indicated whether or not they were a target.
So far, deputies say, none of those notes have been provided.
“We cannot prosecute anyone based on speculation or rumors. We must have actionable information that establishes probable cause before any charges can be made,” said Sheriff Lee Foster.
Anyone with evidence or credible, actionable information related to this or any other threat is urged to contact the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office at 803-321-2222.
