Preseident Trump to impose 100% tariff on some drugs starting next month
(CNN)– A new, massive tariff on some imported drugs will take effect starting next month.
Thursday, Sept. 25, President Trump announced brand-name or patented drugs will be subject to a 100% tariff.
The tariff will not apply to drugmakers who are building manufacturing plants in the United States.
President Trump is using tariffs as a way to pressure drug manufacturers to ramp up production in the U.S. and to strengthen the supply chain for essential medicines.
The president did not mention levying tariffs on generic pharmaceutical imports.
