SC marks World AIDS Day with rally, vigil for HIV awareness
(WPDE) — Monday marks World HIV/AIDS Day, a global initiative uniting in the fight against the illness by honoring the efforts to end it.
The day supports those living with HIV and honors the ones who have lost their lives to an AIDS related illness.
As of December 2023, DPH reported an estimated 20,000 South Carolinians were living with a diagnosed HIV infection.
“What continues to challenge us is eliminating the persistent disparities rooted in stigma, inequities, and misconceptions surrounding the virus and those affected by it. As we honor those we have lost, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting South Carolinians living with HIV, preventing new infections and advancing equitable access to care and prevention services statewide.” said Ali Mansaray, Director of DPH’s STD, HIV, and Viral Hepatitis Section.
The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) and the University of South Carolina are teaming up to host an event commemorating World AIDS Day.
The event will take place at Russell House for a prep rally, followed by a walk to the South Carolina State House for a candle lighting program.
DPH county health departments will provide free HIV, STD and Hepatitis testing events the following day on Tuesday.
