Okot named SEC and USBWA player of the week

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s basketball senior Madina Okot picked up conference and national recognition today for her efforts in a pair of wins last week, including the Gamecocks’ second ranked win of the season. Okot was named the SEC Player of the Week by the league office and was among the USBWA’s National Players of the Week.

Shooting 60.0 percent for the week, Okot averaged 16.5 points and 11.0 rebounds over the two games. In the ACC/SEC Challenge matchup at #22/21 Louisville, the 6-foot-6 center dominated with a team-high 23 points to go with 13 rebounds. Nine points and seven boards came in the decisive fourth quarter, including seven of the team’s final 11 points as it turned a five-point deficit with 4:23 to play into a two-point victory. Against NC Central, Okot played just 11 minutes due to illness but still posted 10 points and nine rebounds in the first half, including seven offensive rebounds.

For the season, Okot leads the NCAA with seven double-doubles and her .610 field goal percentage is 17th in the nation. She is 11th in the country with 11.1 rebounds per game as well and is third on the team with 14.8 points per game.

The other USBWA selections were Lauren Betts (UCLA), Kaety L’Amoreaux (Fairfield), Megan Nestor (North Texas) and Olivia Olson (Michigan).
