Gas prices forecast to drop to $2.79 per gallon on Christmas, lowest since 2020

Gas Prices Fall To 6 Month Low

Holiday travelers may be receiving a welcome gift at the pump as the holidays approach. GasBuddy, North America’s trusted source for fuel savings, predicts that the national average price of gas on Christmas Day will land near $2.79 per gallon, below last year’s price of $3.

“Christmas is often when gas prices settle near the lowest levels of the year, and 2025 is no exception,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Refinery maintenance has wrapped up, supplies are rising, and winter demand is much lower than in summer — all of which help keep a lid on prices.”

With this anticipated lull in prices, motorists could be saving over half a billion dollars during the Christmas week compared to last year. Additionally, while 2024 previously represented the lowest Christmas Day price since 2020, this year is set to continue that trend with another year of modest improvement for holiday drivers.

“Provided there are no surprises; holiday travelers should see pump prices that come in a bit lower than last Christmas. We’re also seeing encouraging early trends as we prepare to release our 2026 Fuel Outlook in January, with signs that lower prices could continue into next year,” said De Haan.

While unexpected refinery issues or international tensions could still introduce volatility, GasBuddy says that overall things appear far more favorable for Christmas travelers than it was a few years ago.
