Department of Environmental Services reminds people to dispose batteries properly

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– As the purchase of gifts that include batteries increases during the holiday season, the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services asks residents to be aware of the potential risks.

When batteries are used or disposed of improperly, they can explode, catch fire, or become a choking hazard.

The department has developed a public education campaign surrounding this topic, known as Take Charge: Be Battery Smart.
