U.S. risks losing measles elimination status
(CNN)– After a year of continuous outbreaks, the U.S. is at risk of losing its measles elimination status.
Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026, marks one year since the largest measles outbreak in the U.S. in decades started in West Texas.
Since then, new measles cases have showed up in places across the U.S. every week.
More than 2,200 cases were reported in 2025.
Texas recorded more than 760 cases and two deaths before declaring the outbreak over.
The measles elimination status will be determined by a formal international review this Spring.
