Average gasoline prices in South Carolina climbed sharply over the past week, rising nearly 14 cents per gallon, according to new data from GasBuddy.

Prices across the state are averaging $2.61 per gallon, up 13.8 cents from a week ago and 14.6 cents higher than a month ago. Drivers are still paying less than they did a year ago, however, with current prices about 22 cents per gallon lower than this time last year, GasBuddy said.

The national average price of gasoline also increased, rising 7.5 cents over the past week to $2.84 per gallon. National prices are up 3.6 cents from a month ago but remain 23.9 cents lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel climbed 7.8 cents in the past week to $3.54 per gallon.

GasBuddy’s survey of 3,028 stations in South Carolina found wide variation in prices. The cheapest station in the state was selling gas for $2.19 per gallon, while the most expensive was priced at $3.09 per gallon — a difference of 90 cents.

Among neighboring markets, prices also rose over the past week. Spartanburg averaged $2.59 per gallon, up 11.6 cents; Columbia averaged $2.60, up 14.4 cents; and Augusta averaged $2.66, up 14.6 cents.

“Average gasoline prices have jumped for a second straight week as oil prices have climbed back above the $60-per-barrel mark amid ongoing geopolitical tensions,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. He cited new sanctions on Iran’s oil exports, which have tightened global supply, as well as recent winter storms that may disrupt refinery operations. Colder weather has also boosted demand for heating oil, pushing diesel prices higher, he said.

Looking back, South Carolina gas prices averaged $2.83 per gallon one year ago, $2.88 in 2024, and $3.25 in 2023. The U.S. average on those dates ranged from $3.08 to $3.48 per gallon.

GasBuddy compiles fuel price data from more than 11 million weekly reports covering over 150,000 gas stations nationwide.
