BASE: Gamecocks Shut Out Navy in Salute the Troops Tournament Play
COLUMBIA – Amp Phillips allowed just one hit in six scoreless frames and freshman Will Craddock opened the first with a home run and drove in four in the University of South Carolina baseball team’s 8-0 shutout of Navy on day two of the Salute the Troops Tournament Saturday afternoon (Feb. 21) at Founders Park.
Phillips struck out three and allowed just the one hit with two walks to earn his first win as a Gamecock. Cooper Parks pitched two innings with a strikeout and Hudson Lee struck out the side in the ninth.
Craddock led off the first with a solo home run to left. In the third, he doubled down the line in left to plate a pair. Talmadge LeCroy then made it 4-0 with a double to the gap in left.
In the fifth, LeCroy brought in a run with his second double of the day. He then traded places with KJ Scobey, who doubled to left to make it 6-0. Carolina ended the scoring with single runs in the sixth and seventh on a Craddock sacrifice fly and a Dawson Harman double to right center.
Logan Sutter led Carolina, going a perfect 3-for-3. Craddock was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI while LeCroy, Harman and Scobey had two hits apiece.
POSTGAME NOTES
- Craddock currently is hitting .545 with a double, a triple, a home run and five RBI.
- Carolina pitched its first shutout of the season.
- LeCroy and Scobey now have seven RBI apiece on the year.
- The game was delayed 2:15 due to rain in the area.
