Members of House Judiciary Subcommittee pass SC law enforcement ICE requirement bill

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– Thursday morning, Feb. 26, Members of a House Judiciary Subcommittee passed a measure that would require law enforcement agencies and detention centers in the state to collaborate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The bill would require the agencies to enter into a written agreement with the federal government agreeing to participate in programs that allow local law enforcement to perform the duties of ice agents.

The American Civil Liberties Union opposes the bill.

Officials with the organization say the bill would lead to additional racial profiling of primarily Black and Brown people, increased violence against immigrants and allies, and increased violations of the rights of South Carolinians.
