Teen charged in shooting that injured 15-year-old

SUMTER, S.C. (WOLO)– Officers with Sumter PD say a 16-year-old was charged after a 15-year-old was injured.

Sumter PD say a 15-year-old is in critical condition and a 16-year-old was charged following a shooting Wednesday evening in Crosswell Park after 7:30 p.m.

Officers responded to the area after a report about a teen being shot near the playground area.

Video surveillance at the park helped officers identify a person who was seen talking with the victim prior to the shooting, according to the police dept.

The 16-year-old who is a Cherryvale resident was found at a home in the city limits, and he placed in custody.

Also a firearm was recovered.

Investigators say both teens are acquaintances, and whatever led to the shooting remains under investigation.

As of Thursday morning, April 9, the 15-year-old remains in critical but stable condition at an area hospital.

The suspect, whose name is being withheld because of his age, is in a state Department of Juvenile Justice facility.

He is charged with attempted murder, possession of a handgun by a person under 18 and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
