Son convicted in fatal shooting of man at his mother’s house

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– A Richland County jury convicted a man for murder connected to a 2021 shooting that happened at his mother’s house, says the Solicitor’s Office.

James Thompson was convicted on April 8, for murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime by a Richland Co. jury.

A jury deliberated for three hours before finding him guilty.

Thompson is accused of going to his mother’s house with a stolen gun on Feb. 25, 2021, after an ongoing dispute with his mother and her acquaintance.

He knocked on his mother’s door, and she answered to find him angry and enraged, according to the Fifth Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

Officials also say, the mother’s acquaintance went outside to remove Thompson from the area when Thompson drew a gun.

The man attempted to disarm Thompson before both men struggled for the gun.

Investigators say during the struggle Thompson shot the mother’s acquaintance five times.

He was declared dead at the hospital.
