Sumter Co. coroner identifies person dead after police involved shooting
SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– Sumter Co. Coroner Robert Baker has announced the identity of the person dead after a police involved shooting, says the coroner’s office.
According to officials, on Sunday, April 19, Ray Hunt, 71, died at Prisma Health Richland from injuries he received from an apparent gunshot wounds when he was involved in a police shooting.
The shooting happened on March 29, 2026, in Sumter County on Rhea Drive.
An autopsy will be performed on Wednesday at The Medical University in Charleston.
The Sumter County Coroner’s Office, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating.
Sumter Co. Sheriff’s Office says the deputy was responding to an incident that involved the shooting of a female victim before the police involved shooting happened.
Hunt is also accused of shooting at the responding deputy, who then returned fire.
