Midlands girl hopes to help further define the American story told on the National Mall

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) – An effort is underway to build the Women’s Suffrage National Monument on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. It will be the first monument on the National Mall dedicated to women.

As part of ABC Columbia’s America 250 series, Kelly Coakley talked with the person leading that effort and a Midlands fifth-grade student who answered the nationwide call for ideas about who the monument should represent.

The Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation is currently accepting ideas for the monument through the end of 2026. Learn how to submit your idea.

As federal funds are not used to pay for the building of monuments on the National Mall, the Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation is seeking donors.
