Spotify removes thousands of podcasts promoting illegal online drugs

(CNN)– Spotify has removed tens of thousands of phony podcasts promoting illegal online pharmacies.

A new congressional report shows the platform took down 57,000 episodes advertising drugs like Adderall and Oxycontin.

Spotify claims 94% of the fake podcasts were never streamed and were part of a spam attack.

However, lawmakers are blasting the tech giant for failing to proactively catch the content or alert law enforcement.

An investigation also found a smaller number of similar phony podcasts on other streaming platforms.
