New SC State Museum exhibit on South Carolina and the American Revolution to open Saturday

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) – A new exhibit opening this weekend at the South Carolina State Museum (SCSM) will provide visitors an immersive way to experience South Carolina and its role in the American Revolution.

The “American Battleground: South Carolina’s Revolution” exhibit honors the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. The exhibition consists of several interesting artifacts, including the 2nd South Carolina Regimental Flag. Made in 1775, given to the regiment just days before the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and lost to the British, the flag is a unique artifact.

“Flags from the Revolution, particularly on the American side are rare,” Exhibit Curator Chris Graham told ABC Columbia’s Kelly Coakley. “That’s one of the reasons why this one survives, because it was captured and taken to England and stored there until 1989.”

Patrons can also use the interactive touch screen displays to learn about the people who lived and fought in South Carolina during the Revolution, as well as learn about the more than 400 battles that happened in the state.

The exhibit opens Saturday, June 27, 2026, as part of the “Salute to 250 Day” at SCSM. General admission is free for the event, which runs from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
