SC bill changing the way shrimp is labeled advances in the House

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– A bill changing the way shrimp is labeled in South Carolina advanced in the House late last week.

This legislation follows what has been deemed “Shrimpgate” when a consulting firm reported a large number of tested Lowcountry restaurants were serving imported shrimp while advertising local catch.

The bill  says that a restaurant that serves both foreign and imported must have a visible sign notifying its customers.

If businesses don’t comply, they would first receive a warning and have three days to correct it.

Then, repeat violations could have fines that range from $100 to $5,000 by the Department of Agriculture.
