New automatic penalty relief program

(CNN)– The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is simplifying penalty relief for millions of eligible taxpayers.

Beginning this Summer the IRS will automatically waive certain penalties for taxpayers with a strong history of filing and paying on time.

The new program replaces the long-standing ‘first time abate process’ which typically required taxpayers to request the relief.

Under the new ‘Automatic Exemption From Penalty’ program eligible taxpayers will no longer need to take any action.
