36 countries ahead of U.S. passport

(CNN)– The U.S. passport used to be one of the most powerful in the world.

But according to the Henley Passport Index, there are now 36 countries ahead of it.

Passport power is measured by how many countries holders can visit without visas or by getting on-demand visas.

It’s a barometer for how much value other nations put on one another for things like trade and cooperation.

Just 20 years ago, the U.S. shared the top spot with Denmark and Finland.

This year, the top passport in the world is held by citizens of Singapore.
