FDA warns about ‘food fraud’
(CNN)– The Food and Drug Administration is tracking so-called “food fraud” when what you buy isn’t quite what the label claims.
It can include diluting expensive olive oil with cheaper oils or mixing honey and maple syrup with lower-cost sweeteners.
Seafood can also be mislabeled with cheaper fish sold as more expensive species.
Expert estimates put the global cost of food fraud at billions of dollars a year.
But the FDA says it can also pose health risks including hidden allergens or dangerous substances added to food.
