UPDATE: 2nd suspect in Sumter murder captured

SUMTER, S.C. (WOLO)– Sumter Police officers have arrested the second suspect involved in a fatal shooting on East Charlotte Avenue Monday.

Police say Devontae Shykeem Bailey, 28, was placed in custody Thursday morning in Columbia on charges unrelated to Monday’s shooting.

Bailey was identified by police as the driver of a vehicle involved in the 11:45 a.m. Monday shooting in the Anne Park area of the city.

Officers responded to the shots fired call on East Charlotte Avenue when they found Leroy Bradford, 24, wounded, says Sumter PD.

Officers provided care until he was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Minutes after the shooting, a vehicle matching the one involved in the incident was spotted by an officer before it crashed into a pole on Andrena Drive.

Both the driver and passenger then ran after the crash, say police.

Malik Thomas, 19, was soon located and placed in custody.

He is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime and was booked at the county detention center where he remains.

Police say Bailey is expected to be returned to Sumter to face charges upon his release from the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
