Benedict mourns passing of athletic director

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– Benedict College is mourning the loss of Athletic Director Willie Washington.
Washington spent more than 38 years of service helping shape the history and legacy of Tiger Athletics.
Coach Washington joined Benedict College in 1988 as the head men’s basketball coach and later went on to lead the College’s athletic program as the athletic director.
His leadership helped usher in the return of Tiger Football, the development of the Charlie W. Johnson Stadium, 50 SIAC championships and 10 SIAC Commissioner’s Cup trophies, according to school officials.
His contributions were recognized through his induction into the Benedict College Hall of Fame and SIAC Hall of Fame, among numerous other honors.
The SIAC’s establishment of the Willie Washington Athletic Director of the Year Award stands as a lasting testament to his impact on collegiate athletics, say Benedict officials.
