Meta must pay New Mexico $25 billion for misleading users

(CNN)– Meta has been ordered to pay $25 billion in penalties in a case related to the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Wednesday, October 21’s ruling marks one of the largest-ever legal penalties for a tech giant.

In 2018, the company then known as Facebook announced Cambridge Analytica obtained private information of as many as 87 million users.

That information was then used to target voters in the 2016 presidential election.

New Mexico sued, accusing the company of misleading users about its privacy policies and mishandling users’ personal information.
