Shaw airman’s family files $50 million lawsuit
SHAW, S.C. (WOLO)– Thursday, October 22, the family of a Shaw airman who drowned in Lake Wateree over the Summer announced a $50 million lawsuit against the U.S. government.
According to the Fairfield County Coroner’s Office, 23-year-old Carlen Hailey, who was stationed at Shaw Air Force base, drowned on June 18.
The family’s Attorney Tyler Bailey claims his death could have been prevented citing the pontoon boat operator’s drinking and lack of credentials and the Air Force’s lack of a swimming requirement.
Bailey says witnesses also reported seeing the driver steer the boat towards Hailey and drive over him as he called for help.
