Over $5 billion in taxes collected this year

(CNN)– Your friendly neighborhood IRS agent appears to have worked extra hard this year.

The Internal Revenue Service reports it set a record by collecting $5.6 trillion in taxes.

That’s a 5% increase over last year.

The agency also set a record for how much money it returned to taxpayers in the form of refunds.

The IRS says the average tax filer’s rate fell to 12.6%, a decrease of 4% from last year.
