Darlington County deputy wrecks going 119 mph

DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) — The Darlington County sheriff has suspended one of his deputies for five days without pay after he wrecked one of the agency’s sports utility vehicles at nearly 120 mph.

Sheriff Wayne Byrd told WIS-TV (http://bit.ly/K3Oues ) that Deputy Benjamin Weatherford is a good officer who made a mistake in judgment.

State troopers say Weatherford and two other officers were responding to a call about shots fired at an officer in March with their blue lights on when the wreck happened.

Authorities say another vehicle pulled in front of the SUV as it was going 119 mph in a 45 mph zone. The SUV hit a curb and rolled over several times. No one in the vehicle was seriously injured.

No charges have been filed.
