More than 1,300 acres in Beaufort County preserved
SHELDON, S.C. (AP) — More than 1,300 acres in the northern part of Beaufort County is being largely protected from development.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head Island reports (http://bit.ly/JFmqknd ) that Beaufort County Council has allocated $2.5 million for a conservation easement on the Bindon Plantation property near Sheldon.
That means development on the tract will be limited to only 20 homes.
Garrett Budds of the Beaufort County Open Land Trust says the purchase is a huge win for the environment and prevents incompatible development in the rural area. The tract runs along Pocotaligo River in Sheldon.
The land had been slated for development at one time but the project stalled because of the Great Recession.
