Bluffton settles age discrimination complaint
BLUFFTON, S.C. (AP) — A former Bluffton police lieutenant who claimed she was the object of age discrimination has settled her lawsuit with the town.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (http://bit.ly/LKWjYA ) that 56-year-old Katherine Sours will receive $150,000. Details of the settlement were released Wednesday.
Sours filed a complaint alleging comments made by Police Chief David McAllister showed age was a factor in her termination from the police force. The town had said the termination was because of budget cuts.
Sours joined the force in 2006. She was demoted from a supervisory position to a patrol job in February 2009, then laid off the following June.
Documents released by the town say the settlement is not an admission of liability but a compromise of a disputed claim.
