Treasurer: 23 SC legislators due unclaimed money
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis says 23 legislators are among residents due money from his office’s unclaimed property division.
Loftis said Friday that 17 House members and six senators can claim their money.
Companies transfer millions of dollars yearly into the Palmetto Payback Program if they cannot find the owners. Examples of the sources include utility deposits, insurance policies and bank accounts. The money is available from the treasurer’s office indefinitely until it’s claimed.
Amounts can range from less than $100 to thousands.
Loftis encourages residents to click a link on his Web site to see if they’re owed money.
In the past decade, the program has returned $80 million to South Carolina residents. The state is holding nearly $300 million in unclaimed funds.
