2 inmates still hospitalized after SC prison fight

McCORMICK, S.C. (AP) — Two inmates are still in the hospital recuperating from stab wounds after a fight at a South Carolina prison.

Corrections Department spokesman Clark Newsom said Thursday that two inmates were still being treated at the Medical University of Georgia Hospital in Augusta.

Officials say the fight began around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday as inmates returned to their cells from their evening meal at McCormick Correctional Institution. Officers broke up the fight quickly, but Newsom says one guard needed stitches for some slight injuries.

Authorities are investigating the fight, but Newsom said officers found nine homemade knives and three cellphones during a cell-by-cell search.

The maximum security McCormick prison houses more than 1,250 inmates. It remained on lockdown Thursday.
