NC Man Killed in Midlands Crash with Trooper

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ A North Carolina man has died after his car collided with the car of a pursuing South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper. The Richland County sheriff’s department says the chase started on Interstate 20 and ended near the Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The sheriff’s report says the man had been stopped around 6 p.m. Wednesday for a traffic violation and sped away. Sheriff’s spokesman Curtis Wilson says the man drove into the cemetery and turned around and came back out directly at the pursuing trooper. The trooper was not seriously injured. His name has not been released. Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says 46-year-old Joseph T. Beck II of Charlotte, N.C., was pronounced dead at around 6:30 p.m.
