Former SC Chief Justice Chandler dies
DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) — Former South Carolina Chief Justice A. Lee Chandler has died.
Belk funeral home in Darlington says Chandler died Wednesday. His death was noted on the state Senate floor with a moment of silence. Chandler was 89.
Chandler was a judge in South Carolina for more than 20 years, but served just 10 months at chief justice in 1994 before he reached the mandatory retirement age.
Chandler was a graduate of The Citadel, belonging to the class of 1944 that skipped its senior year to fight in World War II.
Chandler’s funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Darlington, with a reception immediately following the service.
