Walhalla boy killed in accident with golf cart
WALHALLA, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say an 11-year-old Walhalla boy was killed when a golf cart rolled over and asphyxiated him.
The Oconee County Coroner’s office said Jared Tyler Rodrigues was pronounced dead at 5:20 p.m. Friday.
The accident happened about an hour earlier after the boy asked his grandmother if he could take his pet dog riding on the golf cart. Authorities said the boy had routinely operated the golf cart on a path that runs on property near where he lived with his grandparents.
The coroner’s office said the golf cart apparently ran off of an earthen dam and overturned, and the cart’s canopy support came to rest on top of the boy’s neck. He was taken to the emergency department at Oconee Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead of asphyxiation.
