SCSU Holds 2nd Scrimmage Of Camp

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (SCSU SID) — SC State held its second preseason scrimmage Saturday morning and followed the workout with the annual “Meet the Players Day,” hosted by The STATE Club, the Bulldog booster organization. In the scrimmage, which lasted approximately two hours, the Bulldog coaching staff played three quarterbacks and also closely watched the performance of its placekicker and punter in the likelihood, projected starter Nick Belcher, who is nursing a calf injury, is not ready for the Aug. 30 season opener at Georgia State. Quarterbacks Derrick Wiley, a senior; redshirt junior Richard Cue and freshman Adrian Kollock, all took turns directing the SC State offensive attack. Redshirt sophomore Tedarrius Wiley did not participate due to a sore throwing arm. Cue was the most productive of the signal callers, directing several scoring drives, two of which he finished off with short scoring runs. Bulldog head coach Buddy Pough, who is in his 11th season at the helm of the Bulldog football program, said he saw, in Saturday‘s scrimmage, some improvements from the first scrimmage conducted a week earlier (Aug. 11). “We made some strides and did some good things on both sides of the ball,” Pough said. “Obviously we still got some work to do. It‘s a work in progress. In commenting on the play of the Bulldog quarterbacks, Pough said that Cue “has been a little bit better overall, but we got to get better over time at quarterback no matter who is back there (under center). We are improving but we still have some concerns. I think Cue is pretty solid, but we are hoping the other guys (quarterbacks) will continue to improve as well.” Redshirt freshman tight end Temarrick Hemingway was a favorite target of the Bulldog quarterbacks. The 6-5, 220 Loris, SC native, who has gained over 30 points since coming to SC State and gives Bulldog signal callers a big, quick target, drew praise from Pough. “Hemingway is a big, tall guy, just a freshman,” Pough said. “He has gone from around 180 pounds when he got here to around 220. We hope to get him up a bit more but we need to figure out ways to use his skills. He is big, athletic and can catch the ball. We need to get the ball to him.” The kicking game, which is of concern to the SC State staff due to the injury to Belcher, was handled by placekicker Will Roper, an Arizona State transfer, with a three players taking turns at punting, including redshirt freshman David Gammon, who is listed behind Belcher on the depth chart.
