Sheriff: They’re out there on a robbery rampage.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — “They’re out here and they are on a rampage of robbing our businesses,” says Sheriff Leon Lott, Richland County. Sheriff Lott says too many times in recent months, robbers have targeted Midlands businesses. “From May to August of last year, we had 11 robberies of commercial establishments. This year, from that same time period as of today, we’ve had 34,” says Sheriff Lott. Some of the incidents involve what’s called ’till tapping.’ “It’s where someone goes into a location and takes the money out of the cash register,” says Sheriff Lott. While weapons may not be used, Sheriff Lott says it’s still a crime. But not all of the reobberies are going unsolved. Recently two men, 46 year old Manhines Clemmons, Jr. and 45 year old Warren McDaniels were arrested in connection with a combined four robberies. Sheriff Lott says in most cases, surveillance video is available. Even though you may not be able to recognize faces, authorities say remembering the robber’s clothing helps. “It may be a baseball hat, it may be a hoodie sweater,” says Sheriff Lott. But Sheriff Lott cautions, it’s not just businesses that are being robbed. “It’s almost daily that someone is being robbed just walking,” says Sheriff Lott. Making it even more important to stay aware at all times.
