Defensive Expectations Against UAB

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — There has been a lot of talk this week about the Gamecocks’ offense: Connor Shaw’s injury, Dylan Thompson’s great start against ECU, and even head coach Steve Spurrier saying the offense could have played better. Now let’s take a look at expectations for the defense going into the weekend against UAB. UAB quarterback Jonathan Perry threw for 317 yards and a pair of touchdowns against Troy in the Blazers’ season opening 39-29 loss. UAB had a bye last week. Junior wide receiver Jackie Williams had six catches for 157 yards against Troy. UAB also used a corps of running backs that ran for 137 yards in the opener, although we shouldn’t expect them to run well against the Gamecocks defensive line. However expect them to try to throw against the USC secondary, which still has some players that can be tested. Overall, expect the Gamecocks to have a great defensive showing against another Conference USA team. Steve Spurrier has a career record of 45-0 against non-BCS teams. 19 of those wins have come at Carolina.
