Spurrier Still Mum On Starting QB

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Steve Spurrier is waiting as long as possible to make the final call on his starting quarterback — or at least he’s waiting as long as possible to let us know about it. On his radio call-in show Thursday night, Spurrier said he will wait until Saturday night when the Gamecocks play UAB to make the final call on whether Connor Shaw or Dylan Thompson will be his starting quarterback. Shaw is still recovering from a deep bone bruise near his throwing shoulder in USC’s 17-13 win over Vanderbilt in the season opener. “Connor threw the ball around a little bit today,” Spurrier said. “Not a whole bunch. But trainers and doctors told him not to throw too much. I expect him to throw it around a little bit more tomorrow. Then we‘ll have to make a decision Saturday night.” “But he hasn‘t quite been 100 percent yet, but there‘s still a chance he may get there. He‘s doing all the treatment and so forth. It‘s just a little painful right now. So we‘ll see how he feels probably Saturday morning sometime, to tell you the truth.” Thompson filled in admirably for Shaw last week against East Carolina, going 21-37 passing for 330 yards and 3 touchdowns. Spurrier also said last week’s decision would come on game day, but at his weekly press conference he said he actually made the decision to start Thompson Thursday before the ECU game.
