Spurrier Talks QBs And Courage

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Gamecocks head football coach Steve Spurrier says if you want to be a quarterback in the SEC, you got to have courage. In his weekly press conference with the media Tuesday, the Head Ball Coach announced junior quarterback Connor Shaw will start for USC Saturday when they host division rival Missouri. It is the first time since week one that the Head Ball Coach has named his starting quarterback ahead of gameday. Shaw started in last week’s win over UAB, but was pulled in the first half after taking a hit to his right (throwing) shoulder. Doctors say that hairline fracture in his shoulder cannot be made worse by more contact. Spurrier also said it depends on the “courage” of a QB when determining if he can play through an injury. Sometimes the decision to stay in the game just comes down to whether or not he can play through the pain. In the Gamecocks first three games of the season, Shaw has completed 15 of his 25 attempts this year for 174 yards. He has just a single touchdown so far this year. In his 11 starts as USC’s quarterback, Shaw has led the Gamecocks to 10 wins. The Gamecocks welcome the Missouri Tigers to Willams-Brice Stadium Saturday. USC will look to go 2-0 in SEC play and 4-0 overall on the season. Kickoff is set for 3:30pm.
