Columbia, S.C. (WOLO) — Supporters of school choice gathered in the Township Auditorium Wednesday to celebrate National School Choice Week.

“Schools that are getting better and better all the time and the main reason is the South Carolina school choice effort which has made an enormous difference and you are examples of that difference,” says Lt. Governor Henry McMaster.
While supporters see the auditorium of students as undeniable proof of school choice success.
Public school advocates argue that school choice increases segregation and reduces funding for public schools.
Still many feel the choice, allows for catering education to the individual needs of each students.
Superintendent Molly Spearman told students, “Some may really need to consider going to a two year technical college first because there are so many great jobs and careers here in South Carolina where you need a special skill.”
Those South Carolina careers and the education needed to fulfill those jobs are the focus of the Career Pathways bills.
“We have 124,000 people out of work. I have 60,000 jobs I can’t fill. There is no reason we can’t connect the dots,” says Governor Nikki Haley.
The bill would coordinate workforce development that’s being done across state agencies, allowing for better understanding of workforce demands.
Rep. Brian White who authored the legislation explains, “We know what you need so we can prepare a training program, the technical colleges will, to fulfill those obligations.”
The Career Pathways bill passed in the house and now lies in the hands of the Senate.
